Track Pregnancy Weight Gain the Private Way

Weight gain during pregnancy is a normal and important part of a healthy pregnancy, but the amount that is recommended varies based on your pre-pregnancy body mass index. The Institute of Medicine provides evidence-based guidelines that your healthcare provider likely references during prenatal visits. This tracker makes it easy to visualize your progress against those guidelines at home, without downloading an app or creating an account.

How It Works

Enter your pre-pregnancy weight, height, and due date. The tool calculates your BMI and determines which IOM weight gain category applies to you. As you log weekly weights, a chart plots your actual gain against the recommended range — a shaded band that shows the healthy minimum and maximum for each week of pregnancy. You can see at a glance whether your gain is on track, and the entry log keeps a complete dated record you can export to share with your doctor.

IOM Recommended Weight Gain Ranges

For a single pregnancy, the IOM recommends 28-40 pounds for underweight women (BMI under 18.5), 25-35 pounds for normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9), 15-25 pounds for overweight (BMI 25-29.9), and 11-20 pounds for obese (BMI 30 and above). Most of this gain occurs during the second and third trimesters at a relatively steady weekly rate. The first trimester typically accounts for only 1-4 pounds of the total.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?

It depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI. The IOM recommends 28-40 lbs for underweight, 25-35 lbs for normal weight, 15-25 lbs for overweight, and 11-20 lbs for obese. This tracker shows you the recommended range personalized to your numbers.

Does this tool store my health data on a server?

No. All data is stored in your browser's localStorage on your device. Nothing is sent to any server. You can export your data as a CSV file for backup or to share with your healthcare provider, and import it on another device.

What if my weight gain is outside the recommended range?

This tool is informational only and is not a substitute for medical advice. Weight gain varies widely among healthy pregnancies. If you have concerns about your weight gain, discuss them with your healthcare provider who can assess your individual situation.

Can I switch between pounds and kilograms?

Yes. Use the unit selector next to the weight input. All weights, recommendations, and chart labels will update to reflect the selected unit.
