How to Play War

War is one of the first card games most people learn. The rules are dead simple: split a deck of 52 cards between two players, flip the top card at the same time, and the higher card wins both. If the cards match, it is War — each player puts three cards face down and flips a fourth to break the tie. Whoever runs out of cards first loses.

Why Play War?

There is no strategy. There are no decisions. You just flip and watch what happens. That is exactly why it is fun — it is a zero-stress game you can play while doing something else. Turn on Auto Play, set the speed, and let the computer battle itself while you eat lunch.

Auto Play and Speed

Click Auto Play to let the game flip cards on its own. Use the speed slider to go from slow (watch each flip) to fast (race through a full game in seconds). Click again to stop and take over manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play War?

The deck is split evenly between you and the computer. Each round, both players flip their top card. The higher card wins both cards. If the cards tie, it is War — each player puts three cards face down and flips a fourth. Whoever has the higher fourth card wins the entire pot. The game ends when one player has all 52 cards.

What happens during a War?

When both players flip cards of the same rank, it is War. Each player places three cards face down and then flips one more card. The higher card wins all the cards on the table. If the flipped cards tie again, another War begins.

Is there any strategy in War?

War is entirely a game of chance — there are no decisions to make. That is part of the fun. It is a relaxing game where you just flip and watch what happens. Use the Auto Play feature and speed slider to let the game run itself.

How long does a game of War take?

A typical game takes 50 to 200 rounds depending on how the cards fall. With Auto Play on fast speed, a game finishes in about 30 seconds. Flipping manually, it can take a few minutes.
